Peter Griffen is a full time Sydney based artist and has been painting for forty years, during which time he has traveled extensively and has had numerous exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas.
He enjoys painting outdoors but the bulk of his time is spent in the studio creating abstract images derived mainly from the landscape. Typical of his work is its playful dynamic quality and the strong use of colour.
Peter has been selected as a finalist in several prizes including the Blake, Sulman, Dobell, Muswellbrook, Fishers Ghost and Fleurieu prizes. He has had many commissions and is represented in many private, corporate and public collections.
His book, “In and Out of Abstraction”, published by la Fabrique and sponsored by Derivan, features a large range of his exploratory paintings accompanied by his comments and philosophies.
“I paint simply because I want to. I am a free spirit, love life, I am very optimistic, always searching and I am obsessively concerned with the potency of my work.
I believe to make discoveries risks must be taken, the traveller must get lost. A well planned journey can only lead to an already known destination. At some stage the painting must go out of control. From chaos the universe was formed. The artist enters chaos and by taking control, synthesizing and simplifying, new images are discovered- images are that potent and speak from the past”.
